Safari in Mac OS X 10.7 will come with a built-in 'Do Not Track' feature, according to reports.
The Wall Street Journal said it had noted a number of conversations about the feature, which has been included in the latest test build of Lion, on Apple's Discussion forums.
Other browsers such as Firefox 4 and Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 both have similar options, allowing users to prevent details of their online activities being monitored by marketing firms.
However, rather than actually preventing the monitoring of the data, the 'Do Not Track' systems simply send...

Microsoft has released a ‘platform preview’ of Internet Explorer 10 which will “change the way consumers experience the net”, reports The Telegraph.

Microsoft Corp. will pay Nokia Oyj more than $1 billion to promote and develop Windows-based handsets as part of their smartphone software agreement, according to two people with knowledge of the terms.
Nokia will pay Microsoft a fee for each copy of Windows used in its phones, costs that will be offset as Nokia curtails its own budget for software research and development, said one of the people, who declined to be identified because the final contract hasn’t yet been signed. The agreement runs for more than five years, the people said.
If it succeeds, the partnership may...

A universal do-not-track tool, endorsed by the FTC in a report focused on online privacy released Wednesday, could make online targeted advertising less effective and could slow the growth of e-commerce, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise stagnant U.S. economy, said Representative Ed Whitfield, a Kentucky Republican, during a hearing of the Consumer Protection Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee.
Consumers would likely rather get relevant ads than irrelevant ones, he said. "The question is, is the government really the entity...

The Federal Trade Commission has heard you. On Wednesday, it turned up the heat on the technology industry – and browser makers specifically – to move more quickly to create simple, universal controls to let people tell advertisers and data brokers that they may not collect information about their Web browsing and buying habits.
In a report, the F.T.C. called for the creation of “Do Not Track” mechanisms, arguing that tools that are currently available to consumers are too complex and difficult to use. Moreover, many allow consumers only to block the “behavioral” ads that make use of...

Apple will stop bundling Adobe's Flash with Mac OS X, the company confirmed Friday.
The new MacBook Air, which debuted earlier in the week, is the first Flash-less system from Apple. Other systems will follow suit as the company clears out inventory of Mac desktops and notebooks that include Flash.
Mac users will still be able to install Flash themselves, and Apple has done nothing to block Flash from running.
"We're happy to continue to support Flash on the Mac, and the best way for users to always have the most up to date and secure version is to download...

Anti-not straight bullying has been in the spotlight recently after the suicides of several not straight teenagers, including Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, garnered national attention. According to police, the 18-year-old jumped off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate secretly recorded him with another male student and distributed the video online.
The not straight & not straight Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) said it approached Facebook last week after Internet bullies flooded a page set up to honor teens who recently killed themselves in response...

So September NPD results came out this week, and (unsurprisingly) Halo Reach was the big winner. But that got me thinking: We're just now hitting the weeks of huge holiday releases. Of all the gigantic triple-A games coming out in the next few months, what do you think will end up being the best-selling?
Call of Duty: Black Ops is a fairly obvious (if safe) choice, unless you think this week's Medal of Honor will go against all odds to take the top spot. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood also promises to draw in a big fan following. On the RPG side, Fable III and Fallout: New Vegas are both...

Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed Windows Phone 7 (WP7) will be released on November 8, during a presentation about the operating system. Nine Windows 7 handsets were also shown, each of which is expected to hit the market when the OS officially launches.
The interface is said to have been completely redesigned and so will share little in common with Windows Mobile 6.5. The operating system's requirements call for a 1GHz processor, a capacitive 4-point multitouch screen, a DirectX 9 compatible GPU, 256MB of RAM and at least 8GB of flash memory, an accelerometer with compass, a...

The onslaught of new Android smartphones continues, as Motorola has announced three new models that will soon be making their way to an AT&T store near you. The new handsets—the Motorola Bravo, Flipout, and Flipside—all will be available in time for the holidays, at prices ranging from $80 to $130.
All three phones include Wi-Fi and 3G support, and a 3-megapixel camera. All three phones also will run Android version 2.1, which is (unfortunately) not the latest or greatest version of the Android OS. The newer version 2.2, which adds support for Adobe Flash among other enhancements,...

Securing your vehicle used to consist of making sure all the doors were locked, keeping valuable items hidden out of sight and parking it in a safe, preferably off-street location.
But a new generation of cars includes more tech wizardry than a jumbo jet, raising consumer concerns that vehicles are more vulnerable than ever to light-fingered criminals. In these times, however, those light fingers are more likely to be twiddling on a laptop or remote-entry system than sticking a wire clothes hanger through a cracked window.
A new study proves that the movement away from pure...

The Harvard dormitory where Facebook was born is a red brick and ivy-draped campus castle that, beyond just being a place to sleep and study, has long prided itself as a community of the best and the brightest.
But Kirkland House -- where a curly-haired 19-year-old prodigy named Mark Zuckerberg hid out in his room for a week writing the computer code that would eventually redefine the way people interact on the Internet -- is wary of threats to its sanctuary. "Do not copy or lend your key to anyone," it instructs residents. "Do not allow anyone access to the House unless...

Microsoft has mounted an indirect legal attack on Google over its highly successful Android smartphone operating system, accusing handset maker Motorola of patent infringement for including the software in its own devices.
The action adds to a growing pile of lawsuits over Android that has been filed by some of the tech industry’s leading names in recent months.
However, the legal challenges have not slowed the momentum of the software platform, which overtook Apple’s iPhone software in the second quarter of this year in worldwide shipments, according to research group Gartner.

The vulnerability could allow an attacker to view encrypted state on ASP.NET transactions. Nearly every version of Windows is listed as affected.

Officials in Iran have confirmed that the Stuxnet worm infected at least 30,000 Windows PCs in the country, multiple Iranian news services reported on Saturday.
Experts from Iran's Atomic Energy Organization also reportedly met this week to discuss how to remove the malware.

A month later Microsoft acknowledged that the worm targeted Windows PCs that managed large-scale industrial-control...

With its seemingly endless parade of shiny new consumer electronic devices, Apple gets more coverage in the mainstream media than any other technology company, more even than larger rivals such as Google and Microsoft, a study released on Sunday by the Pew Research Center states.
And the coverage is largely positive. About 69 percent of the coverage either lauded Apple as innovative or superior, or praised the company's fan base, while only about 17 percent of the coverage focused on the shortcomings of Apple products.
The researchers studied 437 technology related stories...

Microsoft, we thought you learned your lesson from the from the failure of Bing Cashback. It looks like we were wrong.
Earlier today, Microsoft launched Bing Rewards, a new program that lets users earn credits for performing actions like searching on Bing, making Bing their homepage and testing out new features. The more users perform these actions, the more credits they earn.
Of course, there's a catch -- you have to download the "Bing Bar" (it's a toolbar for Internet Explorer) onto your Windows machine and sign up with a Windows Live ID. We hope you're running...

This morning, Google announced that over 3 million businesses, with over 30 million employees, are using its enterprise Apps product.
Google has made a habit of making these announcements each time it hits a major milestone with apps. In February 2009 Google announced that 1 million businesses and 10 million users were signed up. Since then, Google has made announcements about hitting 15, 20, 25, and now 30 million users.
That makes it pretty simple to get a rough approximation of Google Apps’ growth rate. So how is Google doing?

Verizon Wireless won't offer any models running Microsoft's new mobile operating system when it launches late this year, but will probably launch its first device based on Windows Phone 7 at some point in 2011.
It's possible to regard Verizon's delay releasing a device running this new OS as a problem for Microsoft, but it could be worse. There were unconfirmed reports that there was bad blood between these two companies in the wake of the Microsoft Kin fiasco, and as a result Verizon wouldn't be offering any Windows Phone 7 models at all.

An input validation issue exists in the QuickTime ActiveX control. An optional parameter '_Marshaled_pUnk' may be passed to the ActiveX control to specify an arbitrary integer that is later treated as a pointer. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue is addressed by ignoring the '_Marshaled_pUnk' parameter. This issue does not affect Mac OS X systems. Credit to HBelite working with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative for reporting this issue.
