Businesses are finally prying their hands from Windows XP as they warm to Windows 7, a research company said today.

"Over the years, IT has had a real love affair with XP," said Diane Hagglund, a senior analyst at Dimensional Research and the author of a poll that surveyed over 900 IT professionals in January. "It was just a great OS. It just worked for them. But that feeling is going away."

According to Hagglund, 60% of those polled said that they were more concerned about the cost and overhead of migrating to Windows 7 than they were about continuing...

A leaked image of a motherboard carrying elements of Xbox 360 mainboard along with at least one chip used in the video game console can possibly point to a new version of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 with smaller and slimmer design.

The mainboard, which photo has been published in a Chinese forum A9VG and then republished by a number of other web-sites (1, 2), carries connectors that are used on the Xbox 360 game system, in addition to the Microsoft-branded I/O controller. The mainboard seems to have only one main chip under a Cooler Master-branded cooling system as well memory on the...

Microsoft really wowed the tech industry when it unveiled Window Phone 7 Series earlier this year. Apple's iPhone has been a dominate mainstay in the smartphone market since its introduction in 2007 -- and there have been many competitors that have come to market since then -- but Microsoft is really looking to turn heads with its visuals-heavy Windows Phone 7 Series platform.

Although phones based on the new platform won't be available until Q4 of 2010, Microsoft today gave potential customers and developers a peek at what to expect from platform at MIX10. Microsoft is putting a lot...

Apparently the too generous and outward way to social network, is not to let too much privacy info about users to be shown on the streams.

In the South by Southwest Interactive conference in Austin, Texas, a Google Product Manager said that there was a misstep by Google to come out with Buzz. Keynote speaker Danah Boyd, a social media researcher with Microsoft, said "There’s a big difference between publicly available data and publicized data. I worry about this publication process, and who will be caught in the crossfire."

IT was meant to make things easier, but the internet is proving to be more of a hindrance than a help in the workplace.

New research shows almost three-quarters of Australian workers say "watching YouTube" is the most common online activity at work.

More than 70 per cent shop for gifts and gadgets at the office when they should be working, while two-thirds are buying concert tickets.

The survey from Dynamic Business Magazine also shows more than a third of Australians spend at least an hour on Facebook while at work.

On The Official Google Blog, Google has announced the addition of biking directions to Google Maps. The directions work hand in hand with the bike trail data that Google has put together for the US. A lot of work has gone into creating a vast database of available biking routes. Google has teamed up with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy to compile over 12,000 miles of trails.

Ever since Microsoft launched its updated search/decision engine, Bing, it has been relentless with the advertising, which has certainly been paying off for the Redmond-based software colossus. The website now has a respectable market share of 9.7%, growing steadily with every month that goes by, though that certainly won't stop Microsoft getting the word out to an increasing number of customers. As reported by The Telegraph, Microsoft will now be sponsoring The Simpsons on Channel 4 in the UK with Bing, starting tonight and ending in about three months time.

A research firm this week said Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 will outsell Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co.’s Wii in lifetime sales.

The Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices firm this week predicted the PS3 will hold lifetime sales of 127 million units compared to 103 million for Wii.

The firm said buyers will continue to see demand years after the Xbox 360 and Wii are replaced.

It did not estimate lifetime sales for the Xbox 360, which currently holds as the No. 2 console in global sales.

Microsoft today said it had restarted distribution of a security update that had crippled some Windows PCs last month with reboot problems and Blue Screen of Death error screens.

The update, dubbed MS10-015, originally shipped on Feb. 9, but was pulled from Windows Updates' automatic update two days later after complaints flooded Microsoft's support forum from users whose machines refused to restart after they had installed the patch. The affected PCs shuddered to a stop at the blue screen which indicates a serious software error and crash in Windows.

Since the 1990s, Microsoft has been the world's legal bombing range. After Windows gained popularity and applications such as Internet Explorer were bundled with the operating system, government regulators, technology pundits and folks who closely follow the industry claimed Microsoft needed to be taken down before it was too late.

For years, the company battled it out to maintain its standing as a dominant player in the market. It was a long battle, but aside from some prolonged sniping with European Union regulators, the company is losing its hard-earned standing as the world's favorite...

According to a Microsoft (MSFT) patent application from August 2008, made public today, the company sees touch-screen cell phones as potential graphics tablets for computers. That raises the question of how mobile devices will work in computing: as adjuncts to desktops and laptops or as replacements.

For those who might not have used them, graphics tablets are touch-sensitive devices, like the touch pads on many laptops. They let you more easily draw and paint, often with a stylus, than is possible using a mouse.

It's not exactly news that business applications aren't modernized on a whim. That's because organizations tend to operate on a rule that can be paraphrased something like, "If it's more or less working, leave it be. There's plenty of work that actually needs to be done."

Google (GOOG) Buzz might seem like a piddling, even tacked-on status updater. But it’s actually one of the final steps in Google’s comprehensive outperformance of Facebook. Here’s why.

Facebook was oh-so-crucial in the mid-2000s, when not many people lived their lives online. Back before everyone had Flickr albums and LaLa accounts, Foursquare check-ins and geo-located tweets, there was one dimension to the “personal” Web: the Right Now, courtesy of email and IM. Facebook is now the top source of traffic for major news and entertainment portals such as Yahoo and MSN, according to traffic analysis firm Compete, and is “among the leaders” for other sites as well.
