Adjust Screen Resolution



Overview

This guide will teach you how to adjust your Screen Resolution in either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Process

Windows XP

1. Click on the Start Button.
2. Click Control Panel, which is located on the right side of the Start menu.
3. Make sure you are in Category View. (if not select it from the left hand side)
4. Click on Appearance and Themes.
5. Click on Change the Screen Resolution.
6. From the dialogue box you now have the following options available;

  • Screen Resolution -This slide bar is what you use to change the resolution, the options you have will depend on your graphics card and monitor, but the standard options are 800x600, 1024x768 and 1152x864.
    Normally the default (in XP) is set to 800x600 which means the display will be 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high.

  • Colour Quality - This pull down box will contain the current colour options available, again this will depend on your graphics card and monitor, for best results select the highest option available.
7. Choose your options from those available and click Ok.
8. After clicking Ok your screen will resize to the new resolution and you will be presented with a confirm dialogue box, if you are happy with the way your screen looks then simply click Yes, if you would like to try a different resolution click No.


Windows Vista

1. Click the Start button.
2. Click Control Panel, which is located on the right side of the Start menu.
3. Click Adjust Screen Resolution. It is listed under Appearance and Personalization.
4. From the dialogue box you now have the following options available;

  • Screen Resolution -This slide bar is what you use to change the resolution, the options you have will depend on your graphics card and monitor, but the standard options are 800x600, 1024x768 and 1152x864.

  • Colour Quality - This pull down box will contain the current colour options available, again this will depend on your graphics card and monitor, for best results select the highest option available.
5. Choose your options from those available and click Ok.
6. After clicking Ok your screen will resize to the new resolution and you will be presented with a confirm dialogue box, if you are happy with the way your screen looks then simply click Yes, if you would like to try a different resolution click No.


Windows 7

1. Right click on a empty space on the desktop click on Screen Resolution.
(With Windows 7 you only have the option to adjust the Screen Resolution and not the Colour Quality.)
2. Click on the Resolution drop down list.
3. Adjust the slider until you find the resolution that you want.
4. Click Ok to apply the changes
5. After clicking Ok your screen will resize to the new resolution and you will be presented with a confirm dialogue box, if you are happy with the way your screen looks then simply click Keep Changes, if you would like to try a different resolution click Revert.
