I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, so I apologize if I got that wrong. But here is the problem. Something is causing my mouse to only work intermittently. This problem began a few days ago after I attempted to install a used webcam my mother had given me. My first mistake was in ignoring the warning from the install wizard that the hardware was not tested for, or approved for use with, windows xp. It warned that attempting to install it could cause system instability either immediately or in the future. But I attempted to install it anyway. My Mom gave it to me and I wanted to be able to tell her I tried it. Well I couldn't get it to work. (A side note here: I have a digital camera that is supposed to be able to be used as a webcam also, but I haven't been able to get it to work either, so I suspect that the problem with that is preexisting in my system. At least I'm pretty sure of that. But that is a separate issue.) After several failed attempts to install the software for this camera, I went searching online for an answer or something that might help. I ended up downloading something that claimed it would fix the problem. I don't remember what is was now. I'm such a Bonehead! To cut to the chase, my system became infected with spyware/adware. I removed all I could with Comodo and Malwarebytes and unistalled all the crap that had been installed that I could find. (yahoo! toolbar, something with the word "freeze" in it?) Anyway...my most recent scans with Comodo and Malwarebytes turn up no infected items, but my mouse still keeps cutting out. Any ideas?

Hey,

You have posted in the right area so no worries there Smile

Before you downloaded this "fix" was your mouse still working ok?

Is this a mouse that was supplied with your PC or one that you have added (eg, wireless or gaming mouse)

If it's one that you've added have you tried updating the drivers?

I'm thinking you may still have an infection, answer the questions above and then we can see if you need to post in the Malware Forum.

Sorry I've taken so long to get back here. Life intrudes at times. Anyway...to answer your questions. Yes, my mouse was working perfectly prior to the situation I outlined above. And yes, it is the mouse that came with the computer. I did try looking for a driver update on the Dell website, but couldn't find one there. I installed the free scan version of Driver Detective some time ago to address another problem and it does tell me that I have several out of date drivers, the mouse among them. But I too fear that my system remains infected despite the fact that scans with Comodo and Malwarebytes turn up no infected items. This mouse problem was a symptom of an infection I sought help for on here previously, though this would be a New infection. I'm certain the previous infection was eradicated. Thanks for you patience!

Perfectly understandable Smile

Try updating the drivers that are showing as out of date. Make a list of the drivers and try updating them manually.

(You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps)

  • Click on the Start button,
  • Click Control Panel,
  • Click System and Maintenance,
  • Open Device Manager.
(You may be prompted for an administrator password or confirmation.)

  • In Device Manager, locate the device you want to update, right click and click Update Driver, follow any onscreen instructions.

Once you have done this post new HijackThis & MBAM logs in Malware/Threat Removal

I followed your instructions and attempted to update all of the drivers that Driver Detective said were out of date. Only one, a display adapter, updated. For all others, including the mouse, I was told that windows could not find a...more recent? (something like that)...driver. I am going to scan using mbam and hijackthis and post the logs as instructed.

If windows can not find a more upto date driver then they are upto date.

We will await the out come of the logs and take it from there.
