1 Content Guidelines on Thu Apr 16, 2009 11:52 pm

Following content guidelines will keep you active in the Help My Operating System community.

Note: this is the official manual of style for Help My Operating System. Please follow it with care. If you do not understand something, then please PM an administrator or moderator, and they shall help you. Moderators and Administrators will edit posts that are not following these guidelines.

There are three types of content that is allowed here at Help My Operating System.

  1. Explicit (very clear, detailed, expertise is shown)
  2. Fairy (clean, neat, to the point)
  3. Otter (friendly, mostly clean, upset against users who are not friendly)

This is the list of guidelines and the descriptions of each of them. Anyone constantly breaking this, will be suspended. This is a small manual of style to make sure that EVERYONE can read good quality posts, and learn something without being distracted. It saves everyone heart ache and drama.

  1. Titles of your post may not be links. Please form links on anything else, except for the title. The title should be readable. Titles are only needed if the titles are appropriate for the content being posted.

    Good example: Configuring monitor settings

    Bad example: Configuring monitor settings
  2. Do not over-link your post. This causes accessibility issues, because the accessibility screen readers put each new link on its own line. One or two links, that pertain to the content, may be in the post.
  3. Be careful of capitalization. Only capitalize the first letter of the first word in every new sentence. Do not write posts in all caps, or invert your capitals.
  4. Please do not use slang. Slang can be hard to understand in other languages, because slang is only cultural. This is a multi-national forum, and there are many translations. Any slang used, may be removed.
  5. Please use proper grammar. Do not use a text message style writing as this can make it very hard for our translation services to work. If your grammar is mostly correct, then it is correct.
  6. Check your spelling. Search for your options in a search engine. Get a spell checker. They are free, and work very well. Use a dictionary, alternatively. Translations services will not work if a word is misspelled.
  7. Colors in your post should be contrasted, meaning that the background of the post windows is a very light color, therefore, use a very dark colored text color. If the colors do not contrast, the post will be modified to comply. Accessibility is the main issue when dealing with color contrast. We need to make sure the reader can fully read the post.
  8. When quoting from another post or another web page, it is not needed to quote the entire post. Only have parts of the post, then link to the post so the reader can fully read the rest. This is especially necessary for news articles. Do not quote a post that is directly above you. If you do quote a post directly above you, then take out what is not needed. Quoting entire posts causes page load time problems and it is ridiculous.
  9. Follow the Guidelines of the board, and the full Terms of Service.
