WHAT: While in Windows XP Professional, I had noticed a trend that ALL CDs/DVDs like to play immediately when they are plugged in. The following is a tutorial showing how to disable autoplay in Windows XP Professional, and to help boost your prevention of viruses/malware. The method they use is to 'autoplay' their own virus. This is through a control INF file. It is usually stored as a random action.

WHEN: Viruses can use this method at any time.

WHY: Disabling autoplay is important, but is not a serious risk. Moreover, if you were infected with a serious virus or other malware, then we here at HMOS would recommend a disabling of autoplay.

WHO: The entire Windows XP community (Home/Professional), and All of Windows Vista.

WHERE: Viruses come from the internet, email attachments, faulty software discs, etc. Autoplay is located in the group policy editor.

HOW: Will explain how to disable autoplay only in Windows XP Professional.

PROCESS: Go to the start menu and click Run. Type in the field gpedit.msc and click OK.

Expand Administrative Templates, then expand system. You will see an item that says "Turn Off Autoplay." Double click the item and select the radio button to Enabled and make sure in the field below it Turn off Autoplay: "On all drives."

This way doesn't work always, cause there is some bug in gpedit(Microsoft even released a patch for it). The most simpe and safe way for me is using Autoplay Disabler Pro from autoplaydisabler.us
