Please run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, copy and paste in the following:

    :otl
    O3 - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - Locked - No CLSID value found.

    :commands
    [emptytemp]
    [reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • Note: The fix for OTL automatically hides your Desktop and Start menu so the fix can be completed. Do not be alerted, this is normal.
  • Please do not exit the program. It might take a while to fix, but allow it to run. If it asks to reboot the computer, allow it to reboot. If the program freezes, and the computer fails to reboot - let me know.
Lastly, post the contents of the log. (Located at C:\_OTL\Moved Files)

i am not sure what you mean. do you remember the other forum i posted about mthis same problem on my other computer? well i thought it was fixed, but i seem to be having ther redirect problems there again as well. i just figured that i woujld try and to completly fix this computer first. in our home we have a high speed router from time warnner. we have hooked up a beklin wireless router to that. we have it password protected so that only my wife and i can use it, and thats the only thing both computers have in common. we both connect to the same wireless internet router. so if connecting to the same wireless network meand that we are connected then yes, it is true that they are networked together, but not in the sence that i can access my wifes computer from mine. we just share the same wireless internet. the first computer you were working on was mine, and the one that we have been working on in this form is my wifes. the problem first occured on my computer, and i had attempted to reformat it, about the time i was reformatting, my wifes computer started doing the same thing. after my computer was reformated, it was still redirecting my searches. what we have noticed is that when we connect wireless internet elseware, such as my work or the free ones in reasturants, we dont have the problems with the redirecting. i believe that this sums up the problems. now we do have one more home computer that connects to the wireless, but it had not been affected yet, although i believe i have only use it once since the problem had occured, and have not used it again since. does this make a difference, do you know what i should do?

I see what is happening now...

Your router has been hacked by a malware author...aka hacker.

It has placed illegitimate DNS addresses in to the DNS servers boxes, making websites you go to check with these fake addresses first.

If the hacker chooses to do so, you will be redirected. Since this is happening on more than one computer, a reformat and reinstall did not work, and we have tried every trick I have...I have to conclude that your router configuration has been hacked.

Routers can be hacked from inside the network, which means if there is malware on your computer, it can trace itself back to your router, log in to your router, and change settings.

Did you have the password for the router as admin? That is the easiest way to get your router hacked.

However, if it was a keylogging malware, and you would attempt to log in to the router, the keylogger could track your password, and access your router by itself, anyway.

Nonetheless, your DNS addresses are going to have to be changed, and we will see what we can do to get this solved.

By resetting configurations on your router, we can fully repair this.

Let's begin by opening up Internet Explorer, and go to the following address:

http://192.168.1.1

if that does not display a blank page with a password prompt, then try this one:

http://192.168.2.1

Once you get the password prompt, enter your password if you selected one, or otherwise enter in admin in to the password box.

Once you confirm that, you shall see the router configuration screen.

Please list for me the values included in the boxes similarly named:

-Internet Connection type
-Local IP address
-Static DNS 1
-Static DNS 2
-Static DNS 3
-IP Address Range
-Host name
-Domain name

If some of those you cannot find, then let me know which ones you could not find.

After I know this information, I will tell you how to proceed after this. Smile

-Static DNS 2: 213.109.72.139

-IP Address Range: ?????

Here is the synopsis...

These IP addresses:
-Static DNS 1: 213.109.64.7
-Static DNS 2: 213.109.72.139

are Russian IP addresses from a company called ProLite LTD. They have been the core issue of hacked routers on the Internet for a few months now.

Very well, so it is true.

Now, we shall attempt to beat this issue, and kill the problem altogether.

What we need to do is a 30/30/30 reset for the router. It is a type of reset that will return it to firmware defaults....in other words...remove the malicious code from it and restores its original configuration.

You will need a paper clip, or something as small as a paper clip head (like a safety pin or needle).

While doing this, it may be appropriate to have someone help you, or be near the plug in for the router.

On the back of the router, there will be a reset button...use the pin/needle to hold down the reset button for 30 seconds...while you have the button held down unplug the router from the outlet...continue holding reset button for 30 seconds...plug the router back in and continue holding reset button for 30 more seconds. After that, release the reset button.

You router should recognize most types of configuration and you should be able to use it right away.

Re-set up your router as you did when you first got it. I know it is a time-based task, however, to defeat this infection, the router needs to be fully reset.

If you have done this all successfully, let me know. Test out the Internet and tell me of any redirects.

If you have any issues reconnecting the router, or getting it to work on your network, then do the following:

unplug the (usually yellow) Internet cable that is run from the modem to the router, and plug that cable directly in to your computer. You should be able to access the Internet from that temporarily so you can communicate with me.

Let me know how you got through all of this.

This would be the first time I have gone through this type of infection, so I am attempting this in hopes the infection will be gone.

So far, from other hacked routers, they have been successfully reset, and the infection disappeared. Smile

so far so good. i reset the router, and set up new passwords. and the redirects seemed to have stopped.

now the virus should still be on both computers still right. we have just stopped it from working, but i still need to remove it so that i dont infect other networks i might connect to, right?

Actually, I believe this malware was only in the router.

However, if you'd like to check anyway, just do this scan and post the results.

If you do it on both computers, post for me the results from each.

ESET Online Scan

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Excellent...and no sign of redirects?

I think I will allow you to browse the web for a couple of days. Let me know if another redirect happens in the next couple of days. Wink
