1 Programs won't run in Windows Vista on Tue Oct 19, 2010 8:59 pm

None of my programs will run in Windows Vista normal mode. System Restore has not helped. A little Google diagnosis leads me to believe it could be malware and/or the registry, but AVG, etc. won't run in Safe Mode. (IE will run in Safe Mode.) Also, having trouble locating my system CD. Suggestions? Thanks.

Welcome to the site. Let's see if this will run (it isn't a program):

Note: the following tool is to only be used under the guidance of a malware helper. In the event you already have the tool, please delete the old copy and download a new copy.

Please download ComboFix from BleepingComputer.com

Alternate link: Forospyware.com (Click the green button on the page to download it).

Rename ComboFix.exe to combo-fix.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found here
  • Click Start then copy paste the following command into the search box & hit enter: "%userprofile%\desktop\combo-fix.exe" /killall
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. This will not install in Vista, so it will just continue scanning, and skip the console install.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

ComboFix is giving an error because my machine is 64 bit. I checked quickly and didn't see a 64 bit version. Any alternatives?

That sucks.

Try this rescue disc....

  • Kaspersky RescueDisk
If you encounter problems running the RescueDisk, you can get further assistance at the Kaspersky Support Forum.
If you are not sure how to burn an image, please read How to write a CD/DVD image or ISO. If you need a FREE utility to burn the ISO image, download and use ImgBurn.

Let me know how it goes.

Okay, got this done. However after running a scan, Kaspersky didn't detect anything...? I guess that means it wasn't malware? Anything else I should try next?

Thanks for your help, by the way. It's much appreciated.

We will manually check it...

We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.
  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using ISO Burner.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
    • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
    • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
    • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
    • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
    • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.
