A more common issue seen when dealing with internet/network connection issues is:

Limited or No Connectivity.

I have listed a couple of simple diagnostics to try before posting in the forums, the majority of the time this will fix the issue.

The very first thing to try is called 'release/renew', this will renew your connection with the internet/network.

  • Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt.
(Vista users will have to right click "Command Prompt" and run it as administrator)
  • The Command Prompt will appear. (a black box)
  • Type in: ipconfig /release. (note the space between the g and /)
  • After it is done releasing. Type in:ipconfig /renew. (again note the space)
  • Once complete, Close the Command Prompt.

If the 'release/renew' steps above don't fix the problem, then you can try something that is referred to as 'Power Cycling' your modem/router.

  • Turn off all computers connected to the router or modem.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the modem and/or router.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes.
  • Plug in the power cord into the Modem and wait at least one minute for it to initialize.
  • Plug in the power cord into the Router and wait at least one minute for it to initialize.
  • Power on one computer and try to connect to the Internet with it.
  • If the one computer can connect to the Internet, then you can start turning on the other computers one-by-one and checking their Internet connection.

If after trying the above you are still having Limited or No Connectivity Issues then please post in the forums for more in-depth diagnostics.

Also, try some of these steps if the above does not work.

----
Go to Start->Run and type CMD This will open the DOS screen.
At the dos prompt, type : ipconfig /all

----
start > run, type
eventvwr.msc

Look under systems and applications for items with red Xs that happened at the SAME time as your restart...list them in your next reply.

----
(test and checking (credit to Dan from GeeksToGo))
1. Test your TCP/IP Settings
Open up Command Prompt and type: PING LOCALHOST
If you recieve any errors (ie: Host Not Found), then TCP/IP is not installed properly, and should be re-installed.

2. Check your Internet Connection
Attempt to PING your DNS Server. If that fails, then ensure that you have the correct Gateway Address set.

3. Check DNS Settings
1) PING YAHOO.COM

2) PING 216.109.112.135

3) Flush your DNS Cache by going to Start, Run, type CMD, and then type: IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS - press enter.

4) Start, Run, CMD - Type: nslookup yahoo.com

5) If you don't, then do the following:
(Start, Run, type CMD) Type: nslookup and press enter
Type: server 144.140.71.29 and press enter
Type: nslookup yahoo.com
Now you should recieve a window exactly identical to mine..

You
said that you used to recieve the error message 'little or no
connectivity'? That error message is quite often caused by corrupted
Winsock entries. Try running WinSock XP Fix (be sure to make a registry back up before running this application).

Run the Network Setup Wizard:

  • Goto Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Communications --> Network Setup Wizard.
  • The first thing to do when the wizard appears is read the welcome message, and then click Next.
  • Read the 'Before you continue....' message, and then click Next.
  • Select the option Other, and then press Next.
  • Select the option This computer connects directly to the Internet. I do not have a Network yet, and then press Next.
  • Now, type in a Description for your computer; ie: Jimmy's Computer.
  • Enter a Computer Name (or leave it as it's Default), and then press Next.
  • Enter a Workgroup Name -- or leave it as it's default, and then press Next.
  • Select the option Turn off file and printer sharing and press Next.
  • Check the information; if it is all fine, press Next.

  1. Disconnect the modem from all
three cables so that the modem is completely off (the power cord, the
ethernet cable and the phone line) -- Also, unplug the Ethernet cable
    from your computer.
  2. Open up Network Connections (Start,
Programs, Accessories, Communications) --> Right-click on the Local
    Area Connection and select Disable.
  3. Close the Local Area Connection window, and then goto Start --> Run --> type services.msc and press OK. Scroll down until you see the DHCP client, and select Restart the service.

  4. Please shut down the computer and wait two minutes. Reconnect all of
the cables to your modem. Wait two minutes, and then reconnect the
modem to the computer with your Ethernet cable. Wait another two
minutes and then turn on your computer.
  5. Please re-open Network Connections; right-click on your Local Area Connection and select Enable -- restart your computer.

If you are receiving this error, you should run
the Microsoft patch (KB884020) for it. Follow the instructions below to
do this. Alternatively, you can download a zip file with the patch,
registry file, and instructions by going here:

http://www.ausconnect.net/files/sp2connectivityfix.zip

1) Download the patch from Microsoft's site
2) Run the update to install it
3)
Run this short Registry fix to complete the update. Type the following
lines in Notepad and save the file as FixReg.reg on your desktop, then
double click on it to install into your registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPSec]
"AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule"=dword:00000002

4) Reboot your computer

If
you experience the error message again, reboot your computer first. In
most cases this will solve many connectivity issues that are not
associated with this SP2 bug.
