Delete those "hard-to-delete" or "undeletable" files without software.

Overview

This guide will teach you how to delete a bad or hard-to-delete file using command prompt, and task manager.

Process

  1. Open Command Prompt. Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt or in Vista/7, click Start > search CMD, right click on Command Prompt in the results pane and click Run as Administrator.
  2. Click Start > Run. Type TASKMGR.exe and click OK. For Vista/7, click Start > search TASKMGR and click on taskmgr.exe in the results pane.
  3. Go to the processes tab and right click on Explorer.exe and click End Process.
  4. Then, in Command Prompt, change to the directory of where the problem file is. For example, if you need to change to c:\windows, you would type in: cd c:\windows
  5. Place in the following phrase: DEL < filename >
Where < filename > is the file that needs deleted in that directory. For example, DEL fredereck.exe
  6. Go back to the task manager and click File > New Task. Then enter in the box explorer.exe and click OK.
