Windows 7 introduces advanced System Recovery options that give you the opportunity in System Restore to Restore System settings and previous versions of files, or just restore previous versions of files. Windows 7 also gives you the opportunity to create a System Repair disk or a System Image. Finally, Windows 7 has a simple backup utility. This tutorial will tell you of most of the options and how to use them.
System Restore
Right click on Computer icon in Start Menu or Desktop, and click Properties. Then click System protection listed on the left.
When this box opens, you will see something different than Vista. For each drive, you have the opportunity to Configure. The configure options are listed below:
DISK SPACE USAGE
It is recommended to set the bar at 20% or lower in order to save disk space.
You have the option to Delete all restore points (this includes system settings and previous versions of files). If you click the Delete button, all restore points are deleted.
Click the Apply and OK button when done.
HOW TO CREATE A RESTORE POINT
Click the Create button after selecting a drive. Type any name for it, best to briefly describe the changes you will make. Finally, click the Create button.
Create a System Repair disk
Navigate to "Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore" or Press the Start Button and enter in the search box Backup and Restore - click Backup and Restore in the results column.
On the left, click Create a system repair disc.
It will detect your drive, then, if needed, choose anything else in the drop down. Click the Create button. Follow any other prompts afterwards.
Create a system image
Navigate to "Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore" or Press the Start Button and enter in the search box Backup and Restore - click Backup and Restore in the results column.
On the left, click Create a system image.
It will ask you "Where do you want to save the backup?"
You have three places to do so.
