XFX
have jumped off the Nvidia-exlusive bandwagon and have signed up with
ATI to bring out a new set of XFX-branded Radeon HD 4000 graphics
cards. This is definitely going to help bring ATI a few steps closer to
Nvidia’s marketshare, and they were the first off the block in sending
us a card based on the brand new Radeon HD 4890 GPU. The 4000 series
has been strong from the start, offering solid competition to Nvidia’s
products and forcing them to cut prices to keep up. With the HD 4850
and 4870 established as excellent performers at their price points,
AMD/ATI have now stepped up even further by introducing the 4890.
Features
To
begin with, the HD 4890 is built on the new RV790 GPU as opposed to the
RV770 used by the 4870. The core architecture is tweaked, but shares
the same 55 nm manufacturing process as its predecessor. The 4890 is
available in two flavors—512 MB and 1 GB. It employs a total of 800
stream processors operating on a 256-bit interface with the reference
core and memory clocks set at 850 MHz and 975 MHz respectively (bumps
of 100 MHz and 75 MHz, compared to the 750 MHz and 900 MHz of the
Radeon HD 4870). With everything else remaining the same and going by
the overall specs, the 4890 can easily be considered to be an
overclocked version of the 4870. So what exactly makes it better? Well,
the 4890 is said to have more efficient stream processors, thereby
giving you that tiny bit of extra speed over the 4870. But it isn’t a
brand new generation or even a completely refreshed architecture, so it
obviously doesn’t set any major new performance standards in the gaming
world.
We
managed to get our hands on an HD 4890 card from XFX before its
official release date. Packed in a rather complex yet enticing way, the
package on the whole looks like the letter X, but finding a way to open
it without tearing it can be quite a challenging task! The XFX Radeon
HD 4890 features a dual-slot design and uses ATI’s reference cooler
design for the GPU and memory. The card draws power from two six-pin
PCIe power connectors. The rear panel sports two DVI ports and a video
output port. Bundled with the card is a DVI to HDMI adapter, a DVI to
VGA adapter, composite output dongle, component output dongle,
CrossFire bridge, and a CD containing a free copy of Tom Clancy’s
H.A.W.X.
Performance
With
memory speed and core speed increased by 14 percent and 8 percent
respectively, the HD 4890 is fast, but not as fast as the GTX 280. What
makes this card tick is its use of GDDR5 memory for a price that’s less
than that of the GTX 280. We ran a couple of benchmarks to test the
card's capability on the gaming front. Look at the Test Results table
to see how the card fared.
Verdict:
The HD 4890 is ATI’s answer to the Nvidia GTX 280, but doesn’t quite
dethrone it in terms of speed. Nevertheless, the 4890 is just a couple
of frames lower than the GTX 280 and is much cheaper.
