First thing when I got my new laptop was to download the Google starter pack. My computer already came with Norton, first month free, so I figured I'd worry about replacing that later and start with spyware protection. The Spy Dr. included in the Google pack did its thing, but it seemed to slow everything down. Then when I was trying to edit which programs initialize when I log in (since that's always a slow process), I somehow managed to accidentally start up Windows Defender, which disabled my Spy Dr. and replaced it. First thing it did was auto-update, and now the program won't run anymore. My brother recommended Spybot S&D, so I got that and installed and uninstalled it 3 times in a row. Each time it will run once, then when I restart my computer it freezes during start-up and I have no choice but to uninstall it and try again. I've just about given up. My computer is only 2 weeks old, but it refuses to accept protection. Is this a Windows Vista Basic issue, or am I unlucky?

Hi TheNerd, and :welcome: to Help My OS!

I'm going to skip over the issues you have had with software not running correctly for the time being. I would personally uninstall Norton, Spy Dr & Spybot S&D(for the time being).

If you need help with doing this just ask Smile

I personally use;

  • Comodo Personal Firewall
  • Avira AntiVir
This is not saying you have to but I personally find these very easy to use and very good for protection + there both free!

If you want you can use them or I can provide a list of some more.

* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
* Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialog.
* Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
* Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.

Hey there.

As previously mentioned by Techknow_Ryan, you have two antivirus programs installed. This could have been a simple mix up where instead of installing the Comodo Firewall, something may have occurred that meant the full product was installed. Running Two antivirus products can lead to negative results.

I strongly suggest you uninstall either Comodo Internet Security, or Avira Antivirus.

This can be done by going to the Start Menu>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Click on the product you wish to uninstall, then click it, then click Remove.

Once you have done that, in the Add/Remove programs window you may still be able to find Spybot Search and Destroy. If this is the case then you will need to uninstall it the same way you uninstalled the last product.

After completing the two tasks above, please Restart your computer.

After restarting your computer, try downloading Spybot Search and Destroy again, but instead from Here. During the installation process, make sure that you do not check the box to install/enable TeaTimer.

In case your thinking that nothing has changed, it could have been a problem with your previous antivirus software... If after completing all of the tasks above it still does not work, return to this thread and i will continue to assist your issue.

If you have any problems or questions, please feel free to ask.

MISSING GRAPHIC was here.

That's what I got just now when I went to configure it, and that's what I remember checking when I installed it. Is this just not a user-friendly program?

Spybots TeaTimer is only really useful during a malware attack, because users often block things that are perfectly safe.

I think there is a small bug that means it is enabled after installing, but do not worry.

Did you follow the steps in my previous thread? and if so, does Spybot now run without freezing when the computer boots?

OK, I had a really cool graphic in my previous entry, and now it's gone. It was a screen capture of Comodo's Configuration, where it shows I had clearly checked "yes" to installing the firewall and "no" to the antivirus. Which is why I can't understand how it can have an antivirus running that I've never installed.

I understand what you mean now.

What you need to do, is uninstall Comodo using the steps a few posts up.

Then proceed to follow the instructions below it. Then you can let me know if it has fixed your problem, because otherwise we will need to use some other tools to locate the problem.

Are you unsure of anything in the post with the instructions?
