I am new to the blog and apologize for any protocol mistakes. I am trying to delete a couple of unused "user" entities from my Gateway laptop. As the administrator I access the user entity section of the control panel and select the add/remove user tab. The screen flashes black and then returns me to where I started. I first thought it was a UAC issue. I could not turn UAC off, via the control panel, and received the same black screen flash. Research led me to the MSCONFIG technique of turning UAC off which worked. At least I got the system prompt telling me UAC was turned off. I still could not get past the screen flashing black when selecting the add remove/user tab.
Is there any way to delete unneeded users and add new users without performing a complete reinstall?
Everything else seems to be working ok.

Hello, bobo1949. Thanks for registering.

Go Start and in Start Search:
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it will retrieve the correct versions of files from its backup system files folders.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows Vista, it will simply quit, without any message.

Now, please restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

It requires those two runs to do a full fix.

Please tell me if you are having the same problem after you try this.

I entered sfc/scannow in the start search box. Windows found nothing. Should I enter as a "run command" or as a command in the "command prompt" window? Thanks for your help on this troublesome issue.

Update: I realized I may have entered the command improperly. I re-entered the command as sfc /scannow with a space before the forward slash. A DOS window flashed on the screen and disappeared. There was no message on the screen.

SP2 has been installed, via auto update. I don't know if it is the beta version. Can you tell me how to figure it out?

It should not be beta. Never mind.

Please download the latest version of Kaspersky GetSystemInfo (GSI) from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Please close all other applications running on your system.
  • Please double click GetSystemInfo.exe to open it.
  • Click the Settings button.
  • Set it to Maximum
  • IMPORTANT! Then please click Customize - choose Driver / Ports tab and
  • Uncheck Scan Ports.
  • Click Create Report to run it.
  • It will create a zip folder called GetSystemInfo_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.zip on your Desktop. Please upload the folder to Kaspersky GSI Parser and click the Submit button.

Please copy and paste the url of the GSI Parser report (not the log) in your next reply.

Please attempt to restore security settings, by doing the Microsoft Fix it (button half-way down the page) in the following tutorial: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

then try to do the user modification again.

Cannot run the fix-it file. No associated file type. Can't find a file type to use on the web, just references to windows installer or offers to fix the problem by running a registry cleaner. Can you/ will you provide the file type so I can associate it with this program?
Thank you very much.

We will try a different route.

Please reboot to Safe Mode (tap the F8 key just before Windows starts to load and select the Safe Mode option from the menu).

Go Start and in Start Search:
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it will retrieve the correct versions of files from its backup system files folders.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows Vista, it will simply quit, without any message.

Now, please restart your computer, in to Safe Mode again, and try sfc /scannow.

It requires those two runs to do a full fix.

Thanks. Will do so as soon as possible. Info item: ran "services.msc" in the search box. Brought up the services page and found Windows Installer. The installer shows "manual". I was afraid to change it to "automatic" without first asking for advice. Should I change it?

Not at all. It will change back to manual, because it normally does not operate automatically. When programs go to install, they turn on Windows Installer for you.
