How to enable the Windows Aero theme in Windows Vista Home Basic
Overview
This guide will teach you how to enable Windows Aero in Windows Vista Home Basic.
Process
- Click on the Start button, then enter regedit in the Search box. Click on Registry Editor that appears in the pane.
- Navigate to the following registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM
- In the right pane, there are two values: Composition and Composition Policy. Modify and edit the value date of Composition to 1 and Composition Policy to 2.
- Restart the Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager. Open the command prompt elevated, by clicking the Start button and searching for CMD then in the results pane right click Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator. Enter password or what needs to be done before continuing.
Enter these commands by copying and pasting them in the command prompt window. To do this, highlight the text below, one line only, and right click and click on Copy. Then in the Command prompt window, right click on the black area and click Paste. Then hit enter.

- Restart Windows by clicking Start, then clicking the arrow on the bottom right and clicking Restart.
