A staff member here at HMOS reported a couple days ago, that Digsby joined the dark side. By using the power of the computer the client IM program is running on, they are certainly asking for every one of its users to help solve computer problems. Now, the big deal about this, is that everyone that has used Digsby, had to read its terms of service before use. However, continuous users, who have not been informed of this latest update, who installed long ago -- are a victim of a bad business move. New users of Digsby...no mercy for you, if you did not read its terms of service.

HMOS is a good trend on Twitter and I have been tweeting on Digsby and the article above for the past couple days. I received a tweet just a little bit ago. Digsby support contacted me on this issue. Check this out:

I checked out the blog: http://blog.digsby.com/archives/693, which brought to my attention the ability to disable it. I am not sure about all of this, as it seems like a vague issue.

I'll let them comment.

I am aware that there is a way to disable the unwanted processes from digsby, however from what I've heard it's neither straight forward or easily accessible. Apparently it's named under completely something different.

they do give you a way to disable this absurd nonsense—though they bury the setting behind a "Support Digsby" item on the menu, with no clear description on exactly what they are doing with it.

Which shows how possible it is to be a bad program, right?

I really wish Digsby support would comment here.

At least if your going to add in a dodgy process, provide an easy way of it being switched off! - or instead, just don't install it in the first place!

Hi Jay,

Thank you for linking to our blog explaining our revenue models and how to disable the option.

As far as performance, the functionality has actually been off this entire time. It is in the TOS because it was planned for the future and Digsby has not been using your CPU/Bandwidth when idle so if you have had performance issues it is not Digsby related.

We're going to make the option more prominent to the user when they first install Digsby. This was a mistake in transparency on our part.

-Erick, from the Digsby team

Thank you for registering and commenting, Erick. I appreciate the clearing up, and awareness for the users of this website.

As you can tell, Help My Operating System is not trying to be one-sided. I am definitely leaving the opportunity open for Digsby's side of the story. As I have heard in the past, security researchers and malware experts have recommended Digsby to malware victims, as an alternative to current mainstream applications - like Yahoo! IM, AIM, Windows Live.

Facing a minor accident, as you can see, the function does not seem implemented, yet. I speak for the entire security community to say, that it was all a misunderstanding.

Now, Erick, please tell us why the implementation was not placed in to the program, right away?

Jay,

Do you mean the research module? Plura hasn't officially launched, so when they do we will make an announcement.

Erick,

Thanks for clearing things up, I can only comment on what I've seen and heard, I am always happy to hear both sides, it makes a change to have someone respond with the other side.

A couple of question tho, when the above highlighted issues are launched;

a) Are they going to be clear to the user as to what they are and what purpose they serve?
b) Are the going to be fully explained and not hidden away in the T&C/TOU?
c) Are there going to be simple, easy to find and understand instructions on how to disable these 'features'?

Thanks,

When it's launched in Digsby, we will make an announcement and full explanation to all of our users.

Right now, users can disable it in Preferences > Support Digsby. There is also a pop-up that comes up the first time Plura tries to run.

We won't make the same mistake again in not keeping our users informed. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to comment on this.

It's a pleasure to have your input on this, at least users of HMOS can rest assured now that any changes will be communicated in the correct channels and that they will be kept fully informed about changes.

:thanksthanks: again on behalf of HMOS :thumbsup3:
