Safely setting services to manual in Windows XP
The following is a list of services that can be set to manual in Windows XP. Keep in mind, this is only a tweaking tutorial.
Right click on your My Computer icon, either on your desktop or in the start menu. Then click manage. Now go to Services & Applications > Services.
SAFE SERVICES TO SET TO MANUAL
WARNING 
Services should be set to manual. Never disable a
service. HMOS is not responsible for any data loss, corruption, or
damage to your version of Windows XP.

- Computer Browser ::: If your computer is not on a network
- TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
- Remote Registry
- Alerter
- Distributed Link Tracking Client
- Indexing Service
- Uninterruptible Power Supply
- Upload Manager
- Wireless Zero Configuration ::: if you do not use a Wireless adapter
- Fast User Switching capability
- Internet Connection/Internet Connection Sharing
